Shortly after taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban announced plans to form their own air force using the remaining resources of the previous government. Among the first equipment captured at the Kandahar airfield were Russian-made Mi-17 helicopters and American Black Hawks.

In addition to these, several A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft and MD530 light attack helicopters were found at Mazar-i-Sharif airport. However, the Taliban were unable to retain all the equipment of the former Afghan Air Force, which had about 160 units. A quarter of this fleet was transferred to neighboring countries Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, along with pilots and technical personnel.

The remaining equipment suffered significant damage and took a long time to restore, with some of it being used as a source of spare parts.
